My dad talked about the days of the 1940s and 50s where a few hundred men would show up a an intersection. They would spread out to the entire mile section line and all walk in a line across a wheat field and as a jackrabbit would flush it was shot. He said they would have a pile of several hundred jackrabbits in short order. The loaded them on a truck and took them to a pit to be burned, and then covered with dirt. He said it was a regular thing. Just show up, kill jackrabbits and go home. If they flushed up almost anything it was shot. No hunting license, no permits.
