Apparently some of you ripping on brokers haven't used a broker before. I guarantee you there is nothing held hostage or joy ridden. That's utterly ridiculous. If you don't have concrete evidence of these supposed horror stories, maybe don't be sharing them on a forum. They can be just as easy if not easier to work with, and almost all of the time at a discount too. I used to strictly use transport companies due to all of these bad raps put on brokers, but switching of late to a broker because no transport companies could fill one of my requests. Yes, brokers have way more flexibility. And nothing went wrong with that move. I've been using brokers ever since. As long as you are clear with what you want and that gets entered into their system, which goes out to the independent carriers that bid on it, it should be a smooth transaction.
Unless you're moving a Bugatti, or the likes, there is no reason not to shop around.
