I've raced a friends on several occasions, here are my thoughts:
You should have him at the very beginning, as the 944 seems to hook up better for a launch, through second it's very close, when first shifted into 2nd, the camaro(or firebird) seems to pull away slightly, but near the top of 2nd, and specially into 3rd the 944 pulls away.
Keep in mind there are many variations, this was my car with me driving against a friend, with ofcourse him driving... I HAD a limited slip, and good tires, which must've helped with the launch. He had a few mods, including a cat back, but I don't think he had anything too serious in that thing.
PS: It handled surprisingly nicely, but it was lowered at least 2-3 inches, and had a VERY low body kit on it. I've raced him around long sweepers too, I couldn't pull away from him without scaring myself...
