That engine number would not be correct for a 1968 model year 911.

For the 1968 model year, the engine numbers became 7 digits, with the first digit determining the model of chassis (really, the engine for the particular model--2=L, 3=T, 4=S ) it would be in, so the first digit could be a 2, 3, or 4--a 1 designated a 912 engine. In 1969 model year, the numbering changed to the 6 digits with a "6" always the beginning number, representing the number of cylinders.

BTW, the 901/06 type number mentioned by Djpateman will be found on the flat, horizontal surface of the case, just to the right of where you found the engine number which is on a vertical piece.
