I own a 60,000 mile 2009 C4S PDK. It's been a very reliable car. One computer went out a while ago, which prevented the car from going into Sport and Sport Plus modes, and the feature that locks the wheels on an incline for two seconds until you can get gas on after releasing the brake (think San Francisco and rolling backward from a light) was gone. Obviously part of the function of that particular computer. That little box was $900 for the box alone.
I just had my PDK serviced, and while expensive, it wasn't totally unreasonable. Now, my mechanic said that the service calls for the filter to be replaced, which is hard mounted to the transmission pan, so you have to replace the pan too - expensive. However, he said he's NEVER encountered a filter that actually needed replacing, so he recommends that if it's clean to reuse it. big bucks saved.
I've owned a 2000 996 with the hated M96 engine for 12 years now. It now has 200,500 miles and has been bulletproof. It's my daily driver. Yrs, the IMS was replaced at 110,000 miles with the LN Engineering model. The original was perfect when my mechanic removed it.
