I have a nearly identical red 2000 996 that I bought 12 years ago with 37,000 miles. It now has 200,500 miles. It's my daily driver.
That chain rattle you hear is something you'll hear with every stone cold startup. It's normal. The way it was explained to me is that it's basically the cam chain tensioners that have bled down and just need a second or so to pump up. or something to that effect, anyway. My mechanic said it was nothing and normal. He said he could fix that, but that it would be a colossal waste of money for nothing really.
