If one battery is weak, it may not start. At least, that's what happened to me. 2 year old battery, replaced under warranty. I was able to start it with one of those tiny electronic jump starters connected to the weak battery.
Can't explain it, other than to say that this is way more complicated than just 2 batteries hooked together. All sorts of electronics in between.
