My family had a cabin down in Yachats...probably too far south for you. Shore there consists of old volcanic flow...So as a kid I did lots of poke pole fishing At low tide, easy to get a mussle & crack open for bait. Traditional poke poles were simply bamboo, a short length of hooked line tied to it. Go a mile or so north of Yachats, sandy beach for surf fishing.
