chain tensioner DIY

So, as a minimum, I intend to replace my chain tensioner pad. Clark's garage has this link to what looks like a simple procedure:

http://boerger.golden-tech.com/images/cam_chain_tensioner_replacement.htm

But if I am reading it correctly, I am going to be removing the entire assembly. If so, of course, I'll just replace the assembly and not just the pad. My only reluctance was the involved procedure on Clark's. Can you guys help clear this up?

Incidentally, the above link has some excellent images of this "ticking time bomb". I've set the large image as my desktop background at work as a constant reminder until I make it right.
