I cut a couple small pieces of 2X4 that fit in the flat corners of the pan behind the front wheels. The lifting spot where the threaded hole is.
The wood gives it cushion and reduces the chance of denting the pan.

I use a 6" x 6" piece of plywood between the jack stands and front pan. ('74's don't have the reinforced lifting point).
Being somewhat paranoid, I placed the front tires behind the jack stands with a 4x4 laid on top of them just in case.
