The variation of this story that I heard was that the Germans sent the Swiss a bit of the tinyest-ever-machined extremely fine wire to brag about.
A while later it was returned to sender with no documentation. So the Germans examined it very carefully and eventually discovered the Swiss had drilled a hole down the center the whole length of the wire.
