Do you have a toslink cable? If so, I would hook it up to the TV audio output and go to the TV Audio input on the receiver (AV1, only one there) then turn on the TV so anything is playing, change the receiver to AV1 and see if any sound comes out. That will tell you at least the receiver is working and connected correctly.
