Just open the flue and look up the chimney. You should be able to see light from the cap on top. If not grab a good flashlight. If you can see all the way to the top, fire it up. We have only lit ours twice. Once when we first moved in to see how it looks and works. The only time we really cared about the heat was when the power went out for several hours. It does help warm up the living room.
