In my bachelor days I had a doberman. Super smart dog. I bought the standard two dog bowl and tray that was popular then. I quickly learned water was a waste of time, she ALWAYS drank for the toilet bowl. Even if I put the lid down. She would poke her nose in, and drink. I gave up, let her use it as a water bowl, and just kept both bowls full of food. She would sometimes go two days and not eat. Then finish everything and start batting the bowl around to let me know, they are empty. She had a water bowl in the back yard that was an auto filling bowl so he always had a source.
