Budget friendly Oceanside CA has a few smaller hotels along the beach as does Carlsbad area.

In Huntington Beach mid priced hotels downtown and a few on PCH are worth checking into.

^^^^If you can afford it, do the Ritz at Dana Point (I used points for a recent stay ) and ask for a room on the ocean side. Really, really nice.
