Alternative - Stay at the Hotel Del Coronado. Very historic and was where "Some like it hot" was filmed. The Coronado beach is very nice and Coronado is walk-able.

+1 If you want to go that far south. I've had some great times at the Hotel Del Coronado. Totally chilled out beach scene down there.
