I live in Florida now and I have a pool. I stored a can of turpentine and a can of acitone in a cabinet along with pool chemicals in my garage. Within a year the cans rusted out from the bottom also, the door hinges rusted out. This never happened to these cans when I lived on long island and I stored them in the garage. My long island home did not have a pool so I guess there is some truth to it. I just though it was the Florida heat and humidity.
