There are two types: the SC has three body mounting clips that are backed with an aluminum (guess) backing plate and the later version with the rubber circular mount. Mine had the clips.
Looked at doing exactly what you suggested and JB welding the mirror in place. Given that I trust JB weld in this situation as far as I can throw it, I went with factory stock and it fit perfectly immediately and the problem went into the past.
