Even back then at 12.5% the houses in OKC are cheap. I was paying as much in rent as my mortgage payment. Pat of my issues was that owning, is more expensive than renting since I had to pay for maintenance and taxes and insurance. My mortgage was 12.5% and the going rate at banks and credit unions was typically 16% to 18% in the Jimmy Carter era. We had a handshake deal, and I was responsible for the insurance and property taxes on my own. And then the utilities, and everything else. With one paycheck, it was hard.
I know I lived on 10 bucks per week for food for over a year. That gets real old. I do not miss that at all. It is much better having money and not worrying about spending.
