A few cars back, I thought I was covered. Had a pump and a plug tool that would inject rubber cement and little mushroom plugs that would expand on the inside and pull back against the inside of the tire. (I wish I still had that thing) Anyway, a vehicle I was following kicked up a piece of road debris that I could not avoid. Sliced right through the side wall. Good thing I still had the spare. I still keep a plug kit with the stringy gummy worms. Last time I had to use it the unopened tube of cement was all dried up. Need to check those every few years.
