In high school machine shop class, lots of hunting knives were made.

We used chainsaw bar, files, or commercial band saw blades.

We would oil quench to help with the case hardening. Some really nice stuff was built over the years. There was also some crap. This was a good way to keep the burn outs busy while some of us used the real machine tools we had (lathes, Bridgeport mill, foundry, MIG, TIG, SMAW, gas welders).
