Interesting. I have always did this by:

1) removing the fluid from the reservoir with a turkey baster,
2) refill it,
3) run the car,
4) turn the wheel left and right,
5) remove the fluid,
6) if looking fresh, refill and stop.
7) If still dirty, go back to step one.

I tend to use one large bottle to be sure. No worries about messing up hoses.
