My neighbor has a 7 year old daughter and a 5 year old son. He got his son a tool set for Christmas. The girl got some pencils, paints, etc - art stuff.
The girl has never had a hammer, never had a saw.
Son was proudly showing me a box he made and the girl showed me her art project. My gut response was:
A box. Something useful, something that will endure, it may be around for years.
An art “thing.” Nice but what good is it?”
Outwardly I tried to show equal appreciation for each of their projects, but I wonder how much of my gut feeling subconsciously got through to them.
This kind of thing, early in life, can set a trajectory.
I wish the girl had gotten a hammer and a saw too, and the boy had also gotten some paints.
