I’ll ask if so and so minds if I watch. Never a problem. I’ve discovered that most pros enjoy teaching and explaining stuff. Sometimes it looks like they’re doing an extra step when actually their experience has taught them doing it a certain way is more efficient in the long run and maybe not so obvious on the current job.
I’ve been known to hand Mr. Know-it-all the tool and just stepped back to watch. Usually, a quick apology ensues with no more ‘advce’.

I watched and chatted a little with the guy that replaced our front door. When we move in, it was a rather ugly, steel door. It was secure, but just not a great presentation. My wife decided it had to go, so we bought a solid core wood door with a decorative small window, and lots of detail on the door. We paint it, before it was hung.
The installer showed up on time, and first thing threw the instructions in the trash pile. He never had to stop and start over, just total pro step by step, super long monster screws into the new jamb. Drill the holes, and watch the door swing shut, click. After 10+ years it still hangs like a door should, and the lock is smooth and dead centered. It was cool to watch him work. We were more than happy to pay him full price, and recommend him to friends.
