This thread will not die.
There were 3 cars used for the long shots in the US. The 68 912 rust bucket and the 68 911t were the ones that made it in the movie most. My 912 was only used for one am session and had little screen time. (Good thing, it looks very little like Gavin's car)
As I reread this thread I was amused by the post from karosserie. His 2 year restoration consisted of taking the car apart and having it painted then letting it sit disassembled in the driveway with a blue tarp over it until I (in hind sight, stupidly) offered to buy it and helped put it back together. After buying it I disassembled the entire car system by system and rebuilt it as a hobby project. Water got in as the car sat and ate into the rear pan and T tube area and the first motor lasted 6 months before the #4 cyl failed due to the fact that both of the wrist pin clips were on the SAME side of the piston. I also found that the top end was only worked on not rebuilt and the bottom end was untouched and the motor was not fully rebuilt as was represented. Tim B and I built the second motor and I have rebuilt it each year or so after that after learning the tricks of the trade from Tim. (It has a hard life at the track running WOT 99% of the time)
The good thing that came out of it is that I found that working on P cars is enjoyable and now with a full on shop with a lift in the back yard do so for fun and $.
