I encountered that sort of thing a few times. I took the opportunity to side with the staff. It took a few asides and winks and nods, but soon we laughed and joked about the A-holes. I did tell them how sorry I was that some people represented the USA so poorly - but this was before Trump. Not sure Americans are greeted with as much friendship now.
