The clip allows the chain to be replaced WITHOUT opening or splitting the cases. Once the case is apart, it is an entire rebuild. I am not aware of the clipped chains causing any trouble.

IMO, if the chain is not worn, (you can tell by the length), and the sprockets are not worn, I would leave it. Unless of course you want an entire rebuild.

Be warned, splitting the case on that motor will PROBABLY result in it needing several thousand in machining to bring it back into spec. Maybe let sleeping dogs lie.

You should buy Bruce Anderson and Wayne's books. They will answer all your questions.
