After building DC-9's under license for several years, they 'magically' came up with this plane.

The Chinese assure us that it's a totally indigenous design... nothing to do with the DC-9.

The ARJ21 is actually a derivative of the old McDonnell Douglas DC-9/MD-80, which was produced under license in China brought from US teams, and taking the configuration characteristic of the two rear engines, one on each side of the fuselage.

The aircraft manufacturer COMAC ARJ21 refers to as a plane “designed by Chinese, with independent property rights fully,” although this plane outwardly resembles the Boeing 717 aircraft (MD-95). The model McDonnell Douglas MD-80 had been previously manufactured under license in China.

Accordingly, the ARJ21 has many features that are reminiscent reactors 95 McDonnell Douglas MD-with a fuselage nose and tail section similar. Wings instead has redrawn by the Ukrainian manufacturer Antonov.

When the wings fall off it, you will know that's it's really a Russian/Chinese plane.
