When I was a kid we had a problem with feral toms killing our barn cats. Eventually a german shepard puppy solved that problem.

The first house I bought had a few acres in a mostly rural area. The area was overrun with feral cats. Eventually my neighbor (who had cats, dogs, goats etc.) shot enough of them that they weren't a problem any more. I know they roughed up my beagle a couple times.

Our current neighborhood (a dozen houses surrounded by woods and fields) has a pair of outdoor cats that belong to residents. They are no trouble. One neighbor doesn't like them hunting at his bluebird houses, I've never seen them at mine. My current beagle is more aggressive than the first one, they may be intimidated.
