Clutch engagement is exactly the same forward or reverse, if you can move in reverse it isn’t the clutch. So you are either not actually getting a gear when you try forward, or you have a serious issue internally. Most likely your shifter is way out of alignment, or possibly if someone dissembled the gear box, they didn’t reinstall the shift forks correctly.
