It could well be the child's idea - and though it may be heartfelt, it may also be unwise; it's a parent's job to explain the downsides and prepare the child. And really, I'm skeptical of someone that has yet to hit puberty making the call for themselves. What are they basing it on? Children are easily influenced. It could simply be that someone they admire is trans. If Becky decides to go back to Bill in 9th grade, he's in for a tough time.
"But why should they be unhappy, hiding their
true self?" Are the kids that come out happy? The suicide rate for schoolkids they identify as trans is three times that other teens and I doubt it's a lot better for the rest of their cohort. Maybe they'd have been happier not coming out until they and their peers had matured.
