I've seen that happen. My bank killed one of my debit cards and sent me a new one, long before I had even heard the story on the news. I never knew if my number was at risk but the bank didn't wait, they made sure it wasn't going to be an issue.

I think the protections of the better providers are probably pretty good these days.
