Yep, I know what a burl is. I have a background in finish carpentry, with a side of furniture making, although it’s seldom been more than a hobby for me.
That said, I am acutely aware of the cost of wood. My family was fortunate enough to obtain quite a bit of walnut and oak the old-fashioned way, buying taking entire trees to sawmills. If you buy very much of it at retail prices they cost becomes somewhat obnoxious. Highly figured wood can be REALLY ridiculously priced. A piece of burl this large would not have been cheap, which makes me think that the artist must have enjoyed working for free.
