That was initially my first thought but after the collective wisdom of the forum and talking to a few welders, that probably wouldn't turn out well. You'd be better off using JB Weld if you don't want to crack the case apart. #1 reason is because of the oil contamination, good welds need really clean surfaces on both sides of the weld, #2 is warpage from introducing all that heat. It likely wouldn't seal well nor would it be flat if you welded it that way.

That's what lead me down the path to just taking it apart, getting it done right, and rebuilding it along the way.
