I have been doing a little reading on Nietzsche and his contemporaries, and I was surprised to learn that when he wrote "God is dead" it was a lament and a warning. He knew a fear of some kind of divine punishment was necessary for a just society to keep people honest (when no one was looking), and he recognized how quickly such beliefs were vanishing in Europe. And IMO, he was fairly prophetic.
