My wife used to teach elementary ages, and understands how a kid's brain works.
Bring something to occupy your child's attention!!
If we're going to meet friends with small children, my wife stocks her purse with toys/gadgets/whatever that keeps the kids quiet & happy.
We're continually surprised how many parents just show up without the slightest thought about how they expect children to act while adults sit still, talking.
Children have short attention spans, plan accordingly.
