NOT familiar with BMW...but for my '09 Mustang I used a gadget that would plug into the always live female 12v outlet. (The cigarette lighter to us old folks) On the other end, a 9V (transistor radio) battery. The 9 volts kept everything alive while the battery was being changed.

(edit) Mine is a simple device like this one...have had it for a long time, decades. Worked fine for saving radio codes and seemed to work for the Mustang. But when searching for this, I note that there are now "memory savers" that plug into OBD II ports. Those probably work better.
