I pretty much live in the middle of town but have Ft Sill's East Range to my north and Indian land for a couple of miles on the other three sides.

Two years ago we had 2 bull elk in the field just to my north. They would lay out in the middle of the field every afternoon. To get to the field they moved out of their Wichita Mountain refuge. Cross I44 and then traveled another 10 miles or so across Sill's firing range.

They were quite a sight.

The refuge has an elk population of about 800. They do so well there is an annual hunt with tags by draw . Thousands apply for about 200 tags. The 2018 hunt resulted in a 137 kills. Not many folks know we have a wild herd that large in SW Oklahoma
