Actually, McLaren themselves built the car that Alonso crashed, back at HQ over the winter. It was the backup car that they got from Carlin. Even with the spec nature of the cars, it takes a lot of time to put one together the right way, so there was no way they were going to set up an off the shelf car in time.
It was indeed a spectacular cluster, and not a good look when you are trying to keep your star driver. If Alonso wants to win Indy, he needs to get Penske or Ganassi to manage the car.
