You belatedly came into the war only because the Nazis foolishly declared war on you.The intention was to defeat the Germans and their Axis allies, leave Britain so impoverished via Lease/Lend that our Empire would crumble and you would then make France the principal country in Europe.Oh, and you were rather late into WW1 as well lets not forget.
Dude, it was mostly in jest. Yea, I know the history. And if it were not for the USA industrial might making the supplies for the Brits, you would still be struggling to defeat the Germans. Yea, we came in late because it was not our war at the time.

I have long admired the British, one little country was willing to stand up to the mighty German army and and say stop you bullies, that is not right! They paid mighty for that, and were not doing real well until the Yanks got involved. With many thousands of ships, guns, and bullets and men, the US and a lot of other Allies defeated Germany. We did not do it alone for sure.

The Battle of Brittan stopped the Germans in the air, except for V2s. Europe was still occupied. The USA rebuilt Japan and Europe. Maybe not to the British preference.

The overwhelming industrial might of the USA was put in high gear. in 1939, total aircraft production for the US military was less than 3,000 planes. By the end of the war, America produced 300,000 planes. We made entire "Liberty Ships" in one DAY!

And Europe was not our only war at the time, the Japanese were trying hard to take over the Pacific.
