My second job after school was in a large company, had to wear ID have a code and use ID to get in the door etc.. they Made Medical Lasers.

I was just a drafter there, I always made sure to be at my desk getting ready to start the day 10-15 minutes before start time. Sometimes if I was good to go I would just get started working.

I noticed the dept manager would stroll through the room on the way to his office, he could take the hallway, he detoured and strolled through the Drafting / Design room at 7:50 every morning.

After I was there 6 months I got a raise out of no where, my manager called me into his office and told me that his manager (dept manager) noticed I was always at my desk and working before the start time. He liked my ethic.

I would go on to work in the land surveying world, I had a boss, if you were 1 minute late would dock you, and loose his mind over you being late, actually I had two like that both docked you 15 minutes pay for being a minute late.

I used to commute 1 hour to the one job, the drive was 40 minutes but I left so I would have 20 minutes cushion. Some days there would be bad accidents detours etc.. Those would be the days I would get my pay docked.

I hated both those bosses and now that I am a small business owner, I hate them more.

We have no set time here, the other 2 guys that work for me are not morning people they start between 8:30 and 9:00 depending on when they wander in.

I pay them 8 hours a day, if they can get done in 5 hours, they get paid for 8 hours, if it takes them 9 they get paid for 8 hours.

Every day they are done in 5-6 hours. They hustle and get the work done.

My receptionist is a single mom, I cannot imagine raising a kid alone and all the running around that entails I am so glad my wife and I were / are a team raising our kids.

Her official hours are 9-5 with a 1 hour lunch. He daughters school schedule changed, she cannot get in until 9:25 now. So be it, what is the big freaking deal?

She takes a 1/2 hour lunch now to make up for it, to be honest as long as she is on top of everything I am have no issue with her coming in late.

I understand when you have clients that need appointments then being prompt is important. In my business we do not have any of that, so why create a problem?

It is stressful enough I do not need to make more problems.

Sorry for the long post, one of my first rules when I started my own business was I do not care about being perfectly on time every day. Just get here in a reasonable manner and get on with it.
