Being that dishwashers use very little volume of water, and running the hot water until the feed pipes are hot can use quite a lot... I expect that for most, that the price of electrically heating (at the dishwasher) is more efficient than running a much larger volume of gas-heated water. YMMV, but around here cheap hydro-E (at 8.53¢/kWh) is typically the same price as gas.

Also, by using self heating appliances the thermostat on the HW tank/heater can be turned down, giving even more power savings.
