We have had some great "free" breakfasts and some crappy ones. At one hotel in CT the breakfast was in the bar area. All cold. Cereal, and dried up bagels, and frosted danishes. The coffee was good. That is when we go to the room, and have a granola bar or two, then hit the road.
One place in Erie, PA had "free breakfast" and it was a coupon to the McDonald's that was basically in the parking lot of the hotel, so no driving necessary.
The bed and breakfasts of course have the best breakfasts.
