For those of you interested in the US Southwest, this is a great book.

starts before the Mexican War and takes place throughout the transition to US control. Oh and Kit Carson, the central character, is shown to have made 5 trips from Taos/Santa Fe to LA in the mid 1850's. Can you picture the terrain? That was one tough guy
