Was thinking about never really planning any road trips until I got my 914. Nothing else got good enough gas mileage. Especially my first car, a 68 Ford Wagon with a 390 that got 8mpg highway.

Driving the 914, planned a lap around the perimeter of the contenental United States taking back roads. Looked like it would take a month. Lost my entusiasm when drove from my Sister's in Rolla MO, cross country on back roads to Bro's in Atlanta GA. It was great except for somewhere on the backroads in IL some kids my age piled in a Dodge dart tried to run me off the road. Narrowly avoided them three time before getting in front of them and speeding away, No way they could out brake or turn that 914. Decided a trip like a lap of America taking backroads I needed more protection than a Golden Retreiver in the passenger seat.
