The Texas system is totally stupid, but what do you expect for Texas. We were going down to the Dallas area regularly and Dallas has a lot of toll roads that make things a lot faster. Evidently they have multiple different systems. And the real kicker is you have to have to own the car and have it registered in Texas to get the turnpike pass. We can rent a car for 24 hours and with the rates it is dirt cheap and it is just a rental. The only way to use the turnpike is pay the rental company a nice bonus fee for the toll, and they mark it up a lot. Even if you drive your own personal car from another state, you can't get a toll pass, it is just the higher rate for them to photograph your tag, and mail you the invoice.
When we were in Yankee land we visited Seahawk (Paul) and he let let me borrow his EZpass. That made using the NJ turnpike a lot easier, and the George Washington bridge was solid traffic moving at 3 MPH at best. The toll plaza did not read the transponder. I don't have a front tag in Oklahoma, so I guess they took a picture of my bumper an maybe my face. I never got a notice from them. I had a legal EZpass, so I did not feel guilty. We just mailed back Paul's pass when we got to Erie, PA and were out of the turnpike areas.
