There is a menu bar widget can turn on from the keyboard preferences. It pops up a keyboard viewer that you can push the option/alt/contrl/shift keys each or any combination and see what key wll produce what character. You can then click on the character/symbol and it types it where you cursor was when you clicked on the viewer. That option has alway been available as part of the macos.
Used it a lot when editing spansish newsletters, even though I had no Idea what i was actually spelling with the ñ characters,
