When I left out of Monterey, CA before I got in the car I took a long deep breath of the nice cool sea air, then got in and headed east. My first stop for gas was in Wasco, CA after driving through the very NOT scenic Lost Hills, CA. The temp was dang hot, but on to Bakersfield and Needles was silly hot at 118. The AC was about at the limit, but I did not sweat. It is weird to think, going on into Kingman, AZ was going to be cooler! And the scenery was back to nice, and like the movie Cars.
Flagstaff is the perfect stopping place, but I pushed on to Gallup, NM for the night.
