Sammy, in EC they took the middle of the day off and worked early morning and then again early evening. I spent most of the time in AC when working. Either at the office, in the car or at a client's facility, but sometimes I got to tour a facility and some parts were outside. Shaded so only in the upper hundred-teens or low hundred twenties. Nothing like getting into a car at 180* or hotter inside when you get in the car to go home though.

In 1980, I dropped out of college and took a job as a millwright making $14.29 an hour. Righteous bux.
The first place they sent me was El Centro.
We spent 6 weeks there working 72 hours a week on big compressors at a chemical plant. In tin buildings with no ventilation or insulation. Luckily it was October.
I haven't been back to El Centro since, I saw no reason to.
I did meet a cute seniorita from Calexico while I was there, a relative of the presidente at the time.
She could cross the border as she pleased and liked to go dancing in the US.

i was broke when I dropped out of college and really needed the money. but I still regard it as one of the biggest mistakes i ever made.
