You miss the point, IMO.
There isn't any "panic", just serious and justified concern. Simply because this event was in a relatively remote, sparsely populated region should not make us blase about earthquakes. 7.1 is
huge. Period. The Sylmar quake of 1971 was a 6.5. The Northridge quake of 1994 was a 6.7. Those two quakes killed scores of people and caused billions of dollars in damages. Just like real estate, it's location, location, location.
No, it's not panic. It's a reminder of the inevitable and a call for preparedness.
